“Recently Renovated in Sanur” August 19, 2014

We decided to take our 10 year old niece on her second trip to Bali. Not liking the drunken escapades of Kiwi’s and Aussies, or the high pressure hustle and bustle of Kuta or Legian, we opted to stay in the quieter area of Sanur. We have in the past stayed at the Mentari Sanur Hotel, it has a perfect position hidden away from the main road leading to Bali Beach. The Hotel itself has traditional Balinese architecture with beautiful gardens and a large pool area.

Location wise it is a leisurely 5 minute walk to the beach, if you are into long beach walks then this is the beach for you. The beach walk concrete path passes through Segarra and Sindhu beaches and is at least six (6) kilometres long, thats as far as I could walk. The beach walk has several local markets, mostly Balinese owned so there are few high pressure Javan vendors.

Back to the Hotel, the room sizes are quite ample with up to 3 people accommodated comfortably (we did this). The beds are probably the largest and most comfortable I have ever slept on. The rooms overlooking the pool area have been recently renovated and are really schmick, I understand renovation will extend to the whole Hotel. Having stayed at the Mentari on previous occasions one of the biggest changes has been to the menu of the Hotel’s restaurant (Tanjung), breakfast, lunch and dinner menus have been designed by the new chef, the Spanish Salad with orange sauce was just to die for.

The real strength of this hotel has always been its staff, for me returning to the Mentari is like coming home. On the front desk Putu and Wayan keep the ship running smoothly and are willing to help with any request, extra towels, pillows bedding or special considerations (with a Beautiful smile). In the Restaurant Agus, Wayan and Dayu make you feel like family, my 10 year old niece adores them, they are all specially interactive with children.

If you find the need to venture into Kuta or Legian its about a 90,000 to 100,000 idr taxi ride or you can organise the hotels driver, if in need of home style take-away foods then KFC and Dunk’n Donuts are a three minute walk up the road, local restaurants are in abundance everywhere. A supermarket (Hardy’s) is located about 3 klm away, selling an extensive range of foodstuffs, general hardware, clothing and even souvenirs. For those who hate bartering at the local stalls, close-by at Sindhu beach is Tootsies. Tootsies has all those items you barter for in Kuta and Legian, but the prices at Tootsies are fixed and marked (as cheap or cheaper than market prices in Legian or Kuta).

In summary, if your looking for a reasonably priced, friendly family hotel close to the beach and necessary resources then it is hard to go past the Mentari,

Room Tip: Both the pool rooms and garden rooms are excellen
